Lamb Shish Steak Bakes

Makes 4

Prep time: 20mins

Cook time: 1hr

This is our second British-Turkish fusion recipe. Our Kofte Sausage Rolls went down so well that we thought we would put a Turkish twist on another classic - the steak bake! You could use beef or lamb for these, both will work perfectly, we also made half spicy by adding some Hot Turkish Chilli Sauce to the base of the pastry. These little steak bakes would also work well if you made them half the size and served them as nibbles or canapes if you are having a gathering.

Ingredients

  • 250g diced beef or lamb steaks, cut into small bitesize pieces around 1cm cubes.
  • 1 tbsp Flour
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 Charleston Green Pepper (or bell), diced into 1cm pieces
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3 tsp Lamb Shish Marinade
  • 200ml Chicken or Beef Stock
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Puree
  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten

Cooking Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan and put over a high heat. In a bowl, add the flour to the diced meat. Make sure the pieces of meat a nice and small. Mix the flour in so all pieces are coated. Add the beef to the pan once the oil is hot and brown the beef off for around 6-7 minutes. Once the all of the beef is browned, remove the pan and place in a bowl.
  2. Lower the heat to a medium heat and add the diced onion and pepper to the pan, sweat the onion and peppers off for 10mins until softened. Add the meat back to the pan along with the Lamb Shish Marinade and stir through, cook it off for 1-2mins.
  3. Mix the tomato puree into the stock and then pour into the pan. Give everything a good stir and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer over a low-medium heat. Simmer for 30mins.
  4. After 30mins a thick gravy should be coating the meat and the meat should be soft. Remove from the heat and allow to completely cool for around 30mins.
  5. Preheat the oven to 210c. After the filling has cooled, roll the pastry out (we use ready rolled puff pasty - you could make your own if you choose). Cut the pastry into 8 equal size pieces.
  6. If you want to add some heat to your lamb shish bakes then add 1tsp of hot Turkish Chilli Sauce to 4 of the pastry pieces.
  7. On a lined baking sheet place 4 pieces of pastry. Add 1/4 of the filling to eahc piece of pastry. Egg wash the edges and then place another piece of pastry on top. Use a fork to push the edges down and seal and a knife to create slashes on the top. Egg wash each bake and then place in preheated oven for 15-20mins.
  8. They are ready when each Lamb Shish Bake is golden with flakey, crispy pastry. Enjoy!
